Certified instructor description:
Very dancy step choreography taught by a superb instructor. While the pace and patterns are super-challenging, Patrick does everything possible to help you keep up. He’s obviously having fun — and he’s fun to watch — but in this video he’s definitely “teaching” (not just “showing off”). He begins with, and repeats, an even-rhythm, eight-count base move (so you’ll always have a solid sense of the underlying combo). Then he starts layering in the choreography — turns and pivots, tick- tocks and pendulums, mambos and scissors (intermixing easy-to-follow big moves with very complex foot patterns). Fortunately, there’s always one person doing an easier/non-spin variation. Throughout, you’ll be motivated by Patrick’s easy-going style and you-can-do-it attitude. ©2006. DVD has: Chapter menus.

Patrick Goudeau's Step Up

Patricks Step up Video
I really wanted to find a video of Patricks that I could follow, but unfortunatly this one was too hard to follow. He kept saying "not to worry, that he would take us through the step," but I just couldnt follow him. Mainly, I think it is due to the guy running the camera. He or she kept zooming in on Patrick's face and I wanted to see the whole person with his feet included. It's a shame that so many video's are done this way because Patrick is a fun guy to watch and follow for the most part. - posted by Margo on 12/23/2010
I'm clumsy and I learned it. You can too. It's worth it.
I am extremely clumsy. I tend to lean towards the basic step DVD's for this reason. I decided to give this a try after I purchased Hard Work Conditioning (which I love too) I love it. It's made me more confident to try more complicated step routines. It took me two weeks to learn. I set the repeat on the DVD player for the more complicated moves and did them in slow motion until I mastered them. It took me that long because I didn't do it everyday so it may take less time. The fact that I liked the DVD enough to keep with it for 2 weeks should tell you everything as I tend to bore easily. It's fun, it's hard, it's complicated but it will make you laugh and you will enjoy working out. Give it time. You won't regret it. P.S. I agree about the camera shots. What the heck is that? I'm learning the moves and they keep going to Patrick's face. He is too cute though so I suffer through it. - posted by Kathy on 7/30/2009
Step Off!
I LOVE Goudeau! Very friendly and easy to follow, but because I detest step workouts, sorry, Pat, I hated this too, right up there with every other step workout! I did think this was easier to follow than some that I've tried(like that other one from Cathe!)It will make you sweat and it is challenging! - posted by Jen on 7/29/2009
Great Moves!
Bravo, Patrick! As usual, you are still challenging me by keeping me thinking and having fun while burning calories. Love the way this one keeps you moving all around the step. Love your style. Thanks for offering us something so uniquely different from other instructors. I'm 43 and have been stepping for many years. This workout is one I like to do when I want a good workout, but don't want to be physically wasted the rest of the day. The choreography is advanced, but more moderate-to-advanced physically. BTW, I really like the warm up in this vidoe. Great Foot Work! - posted by Dawn on 12/6/2008
Hard, but I liked it
I have to say I was frustrated at first with this workout, but after I did it a couple of times I really liked it!! Once you know the moves you can really put all your energy into it and burn some caloriesQ!! - posted by Pam on 2/29/2008
Be Careful...
I fell and broke my arm doing this video! I have been stepping since the 80s, so I'm a pretty experienced/advanced stepper. I actually really like Patrick Goudreau's choreography - once you learn it, it's lots of fun and stays interesting. I had done this video at least 7-8 times before, but had not attempted all the challenging moves - until the last time, when I took a huge stumble off the front of the step with lots of momentum. That led to surgery, 2 casts, a brace, and now after 3 months of physical therapy, a 30% reduction in mobility in my left arm. I would not recommend doing the tricky moves in this video that take you flying off the FRONT of the step - if you fall, you won't land on your soft butt and are much more likely to get injured~ - posted by Pam on 2/26/2008
What Happened
Truly advanced. Truly poor camera work. Truly not executed well for learning the routines. Truly an incredible instructor. But where is the finale when the routines are put together and we go through the whole thing for a couple of times I will send this one back to Collage. Collage thank you for your guarantee. Fun once you learn it
The first time I tried this one I was ready to return it, I was so frustrated by the complex choreography (and I usually do ok with complex). As the other reviewers have indicated, the camera skips to Patrick's upper body just when you need to see what the steps are. I also thought I wouldn't be able to get my heart rate up, with too much focus on dancy steps (I'm intermediate/advance). But I decided to give it a couple of tries because I liked Patrick's great laugh and cheerful attitude, and also the funky music. Once I finally learned it and got used to Patrick's style, I like this one. I can get my heart rate up, and this DVD makes the hour fly by for me, because I have to pay attention to the steps, and I forget about the time. The DVD has 3 sections (plus one where they're put all together), and I found it worked better to master them one at a time, rather than try to learn the entire workout at once. - posted by Julie M. on 2/18/2007
Frustrating But Still Enjoyable
I have to agree with the other posters about the camera crew. Every time you think you're getting a move down, they pan up to his face. Very frustrating. On the other hand, I still enjoyed the workout. I love complex choreography so this fits the bill. I liked Step My Way better but I also previewed that one first. I think it is essential to preview Patrick's workouts before doing them since they are so complex. - posted by on 1/18/2007
Too Complex For Me
I've been doing step for years and love complex choreography, but this was way too much for me. As the other reviewers state, the camera isn't even on the feet most of the time, so it was almost impossible. I gave up and will be returning the video. - posted by Judi on 1/7/2007

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
