Certified instructor description: A fluid program that integrates yoga, dance, balance and stretch into traditional body sculpting. It combines the grace and subtlety of these “softer” techniques with the proven effectiveness of gym-style toning. This video is not easy — it includes a classic set of no-nonsense exercises (e.g. lunges, pliés, crunches, bicep curls). But it’s how they’re sequenced and blended into other movements that makes this program different (e.g. alternated with deep-muscle stretches or followed by a full-range-of-motion chest opener). Petra keeps you focused and engaged with calm, always confident cuing. Requires 1 to 5 lb. dumbbells. ©2007. DVD has: Chapter menus.

Petra Kolber's Elegant Strength

Wonderful for beginners, rehab, or a light day
I am 56 years old and recovering from a serious illness. I was an intermediate/advanced exerciser (used exercise videos starting with Jane Fonda) before this illness which resulted in a lot of bed rest for five years. I tried doing a little bit of my intermediate DVDs, but they were too difficult and resulted in pain. Petra is perfect! Her cuing is impeccable and she is very pleasant and encouraging. I can do short segments or combine for longer. The movements are very fluid which is good for any level. She is my new favorite! - posted by Sharene on 3/31/2011
Wonderful workout for all the muscles
I love doing this workout. I save it for times when I really just don't feel like working out because it's so fun. Petra's style is right in alignment with how I'd like to workout: somewhere between ballet and hard-core pumping iron! The balance challenges are great, and if you need more, just use heavier weights. - posted by Lara on 3/3/2011
Elegant strength
Let me say that I enjoyed doing the actual workout on this dvd. Petra gives excellent cues and she presents them in a friendly, non-threatening manner. The exercises are both dynamic and relaxing at the same time. There is a welcome emphasis on balance as well. I enjoy interspersing this more peaceful and calming type of exercise routine among those which emphasize cardio and weight training. After it was over, I felt both sweaty and renewed. Petra is one of my favorite instructors, and this routine was true to her style. - posted by Lynn on 11/23/2010
Had to Return it
I normally love Petra Kobler's videos, but I had to return this one because it really did not hold my interest. The same sequence was repeated over and over and after a while I was annoyed and just had to turn it off and put in something else. Her streamlined strength video was better though. - posted by Lisa on 6/19/2010
Really felt the workout
I really enjoyed this workout. I am a big Petra fan but normally only buy her step videos. It was great to work out with Petra in a more relaxed way, yet I still felt extremely challenged and boy did I feel it the next morning. This will be a great complement to her more high energy workouts. - posted by Carol on 2/22/2008
Loved It!
I really enjoyed the mind body connection of this workout. I usually do Cathe's strength and cardio workouts and this was a nice change. Weights are still my first choice but Petra's definitely has a place in my rotation. It was nice to work at a slower more controlled pace. I was also surprised when I realized I was feeling it the next day. This and Ellen's new Fat Burning Fusion give a new dimension to my workouts which I am really enjoying, - posted by PhyllisG on 12/14/2007
A must have workout
This is absolutely one of Petra's best workouts. I felt energized and well worked by the end. Petra's cueing is perfect, the set is beautiful and the workout is unique and inspiring. A great mix to add into your weekly rotation. - posted by Susan on 12/12/2007
LOVED IT
I did not really know what to expect, but I loved this DVD. I found the time flying by as I really had to concentrate and focus on the muscles being used as well as my balance. I think it will be the perfect workout for when I do not want to pound my body. This DVD left me feeling calm and yet I also was suprisingly sore the next day. 2 thumbs up for me. - posted by Debra on 12/11/2007
Calm Mind/Body Connection Workout
Petra's Elegant Strength workout is very calm. The set alone with the Buddha and music is excellent for this workout. If I had to compare it to another workout I would compare it to Kari's Reach. But I got rid of Reach I didn't click with it. Petra cues extremely well. While I thought I wouldn't get any DOMS from this workout I surprisingly did get DOMS on my Butt, Legs and Shoulders. This workout is not your typical strength workout. I would not depend on this as my sole source of strength workout. I still use Cathe as my main #1 choice. What I liked about this workout is that it does relax you and keeps you calm throughout the workout. No frenetic pace here. Its a total mind/body connection throughout the workout. I like how Petra tones your muscles and then stretches you out then on to the next. So you strengthen and lengthen all while having a calm controlled mind/body connection. This workout would be good in a rotation with Petra's Breathe I and II workouts. Also this would work with Ellen's Fat Burning Fusion workout. This workout fits very well with those fusion workouts in a rotation. I mention this because sometimes people don't know what category a workout fits into. For now I'm glad I have this workout. It is hard to describe the feeling one gets from doing this type of workout. I will leave this workout for a late afternoon or evening workout. - posted by NA/AWA on 12/11/2007
Very dissapointed
I really really wanted to like this dvd, especially since it was featured in the Health magazine. Unfortunately, I'm dissapointed. I'm used to doing strength-related dvds, which focus on ballet/yoga movements. After working out with this one for about 40 minutes, I almost didn't feel anything. The instructor does not spend enough time on all "trouble" spots. I wish I bought Ellen Barrett's fat burning fusion, which is similar to this one. I'll continue enjoing Squeeze for now. - posted by Alisa on 12/10/2007
Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
