Certified instructor description: Non-stop and very well-cued, it’s a “good old-fashioned” step-aerobic fat-burner. Petra heightens the interest level with a flowing medley of on, off, over, diagonal and around-the-step moves. They’re all taught add-on-style — you’ll learn a pattern, add on something new and take it from the top. Then Petra weaves that choreography into another progressively-evolving series (e.g. using the same moves in a different sequence or a different direction). Petra’s fluid transitions and friendly instruction make it do-able — she carefully demos each routine while always previewing anything that’s a little complex. ©2006. DVD has: Chapter menus.

Petra Kolber's PK Step

Good, but I am Still Lost
I really like Petra's creative workout style, cueing and personality. I have been doing step for awhile, and like step DVDs such as Kari Anderson's for their creativity as well. I've been a little disappointed to find some of PK Step confusing to follow on my first two tries though. I think once I catch on I will like it more. I love Petra's Bootcamp Boogie, and hope PK Step will grow on me too. - posted by Holly on 1/27/2012
Petra too dancy for me
I am a veteran stepper and decided to branch out to new instructors. I am a huge fan of Cathe Friederich, Karen Voight and Gin Miller. I have mastered their DVDs. I turned on this DVD and was lost from the beginning. It was too overwhelming to continue. This (and one other Petra DVD from this same order) are the only DVDs I've ever returned to Collage. - posted by Chris on 1/19/2012
If you really love Petra, it's definitely worth the effort to learn
I'm persnickety about instructors and Petra is on my short list of favorites, so learning this video was important to me. When I first ran through it, I nearly cried because she does so much that requires your back to the TV. Finally I determined I was going to do what it took to learn it and now I look forward to getting better at it each time. Here are my tips based on my learning curve and stepping skill level: 1. Don't try to 'guess' what she's going to do next - you end up on the wrong foot and behind the routine. 2. Petra's cuing is excellent - it took me three or four times to realize that when she's cuing, the step comes up NEXT, not that you should be doing the step AS she's saying it. Also speak the cues aloud as you do it. 3. Try ANGLING your step to the TV to learn the back-to-TV moves - you can see her somewhat peripherally that way. 4. Employ a "High Intensity Interval Training" mindset as you learn - Make sure your warm up includes lots of power moves so that your heart rate is increased enough. This way when you need to stop and rewind (or slow-mo), you're utilizing that as recovery time. 5. Don't try to learn the entire thing at once - add on a step each time you do it. 6. Don't try to do ALL of the alternate moves - I still don't do some of the turns. I figure as the video becomes "routine" to me, I can add those later. 7. Alternate days when learning new videos or do them on days when you know you're not up to high intensity. I did this video every-other "aerobics day." Hope this helps!! Definitely worth having for lovers of Stepping. - posted by Laura on 1/2/2012
Not for me
I'm an intermediate exerciser, but have many years of step experience and have mastered choreography by Christi Taylor, Gay Gasper, Cathe Friedrich, Kari Anderson and others. I had alot of trouble with this video and will probably not keep it. While Petra is likeable I didn't think she cued very well or broke things down enough. It was pretty hard on the knees too. On top of that, the music is just absolutely horrible...if it were a little better I might be able to bear running through this over and over to "get-it". It's either going back or to the library. - posted by Teresa on 12/22/2011
Lots of Fun
This workout is a lot of fun. I've just started stepping again, and I'm a bit older than when I took classes at the gym. Remembering and learning the sequences can be a bit challenging, but that's what the rewind button is for. I like how Petra incorporates many of the moves in the warm-up which makes it easier in the workout when you see them again. Petra has a warm teaching style and cute personality. - posted by Michele on 2/22/2011
Complex is Accurate
I unfortunately did not make past the warm up. It seemed Petra was adding on before I got down the other step(s). I could not keep up well. Ended up sending this one back. I have 1 other Petra Kolber workout and enjoy her personality. - posted by Joelene on 10/14/2010
Fun routine
I got this DVD, because I like dancey routines that challenge me mentally as well as physically, and because I also like lower impact routines, but I still want a great workout. The first 3 times I attempted this one, I was thinking that I had wasted my money, because I was stumbling trying to get the moves (and I have been stepping for 13 years). I'd miss a turn or make one extra step, and suddenly I was trying to figure out which way I was supposed to be facing and turning, while Petra was already on to the next step. I was beginning to feel like a beginner! I was actually rewinding the DVD in a few spots which I never need to do. But then on the 4th attempt, it suddenly all clicked and I could not only do the workout, but enjoy it, perform it, and really work the moves for a great workout. Petra's cueing is excellent, once you get her lingo down. I like Petra; she is motivating, and non-annoying. It's a fun DVD. - posted by Jenny on 6/1/2010
Love It and Here's Why
I am an avid stepper that does mostly Cathe, Patrick G. and more advanced and complex dance choreography with the step. I was out for almost a month with an injury and could not do any step. I decided to get this workout as I know Petra's personality and cueing are great and knew it would not be as intense as the others I mentioned. I needed a step workout to get me back up to speed that was lower impact. This workout says LOWER impact so for those of you looking for maximum intensity and more advanced , this workout is not for you. It is for those that are INT to INT/ADV and do not want to do plyo and hopping all over the place so I think this workout is spot on for what it advertises. I enjoyed this workout so much because I got ALL of the moves the first time around and my heart rate was up there the whole time. Maybe not quite as high as a Cathe workout, but those can leave me breathless, and when I want that those are great. I was in my target zone though. It was fun to do a workout where I could do lower impact and did not have to work so hard at learning the moves, so I could just do it and have fun. I liked this one so much that I will keep this in my rotation for the days where I want a lower impact workout and don't want to have to think too hard about choreography, don't want to be breathless that day, but know that I will still get a great, fun workout that day. If any of you out there are avid steppers like me, end up with injury or maybe an illness, and you cannot work out for awhile, this is a great workout to start back with and get you up to speed. You will probably have fun and want to keep it in your rotation for lighter days as well. - posted by Jill Sherry on 12/1/2009
Enjoyable but not very intense
After you devote a few attempts at this, you will learn the moves. It isn't that this routine is hard or advanced, it is just constantly changing, and at times facing away from the T.V. I would say it is pretty dancy and was disappointed that it didn't get my heart rate up. Petra is perky and friendly, but I don't know how many times I would actually use this DVD. According to HR monitor I spent most of the time at the low end of my zone, not what I expect from a step workout, especially one that is rated Inter/Adv. - posted by Kasey on 7/29/2009
Sooo much FUN!!
I found this video a challenge to learn, which is a good thing; although, it can be quite frustrating in the beginning. When I first viewed this video my comment was "You have GOT to be kidding!!" The cueing in some places was difficult to follow until I learned what terminology went with which move. Now that I am accomplished with this video, it is so much fun. It is lower impact, complex choreography and so very smooth and flowing. With modifications you can make this video as aerobic as you wish. It is a good video to add your own variations for the upper body. I began fitness training with Jack LeLanne. I'm not as old as he (giggles). Julia; Alpine, TX - posted by Julia on 5/12/2009

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
