Time graph for Prevention: Dance It Off!
Four 10-minute segments: hip hop, Latin and jazz for cardio, plus ballet for toning. Jennifer Galardi captures the essence of each dance type. Not just a quick overview of each style, every section features 6 to 8 dance-specific steps (so it’s physically exhilarating and mentally interesting). The instruction is very easy to follow because she cues each movement to the actual beat of the music (e.g. “hop, hop, shuffle, open, close, open, close to the right…”). The all-standing toning segment features classic ballet exercises that focus on grace, balance and strength. DVD includes a short bonus intructional segment. ©2005. DVD has: Chapter menus, Spanish option, Region 1.

Prevention: Dance It Off!

Not my favorite...
I was really disappointed in this DVD because I love the other ones I have from Prevention. This one was really hard to do on carpeting with the choreography, it was also really hard on my knees. If you have two left feet, this might be difficult. Also on a side note, her hair was AWFUL! Almost found it distracting... Good cueing, terrible choreography and really hard on carpet. - posted by Emma on 3/14/2008
Fun and funky workout with lots of challenge, but poor cuing
The choreography in this DVD is both interesting and challenging. That is why I gave it 4 stars, despite my frustration with the poor cuing. I find myself having a great time and wanting to do more of the workout each time I use the DVD. I am a dancer and have been doing dance, aerobics, pilates and yoga videos for many years. Nevertheless, it took me a while to get comfortable with this DVD. The fast pace of the workout makes good cuing essential. Unfortunately, Jennifer's cues are often late or unclear. As a result, you have to rely more on your memory from the last time you did the workout, on the rhythm, or on your intuition as a dancer, to help you figure out what comes next. I would not recommend this video for a beginner. I WOULD recommend that intermediate and advanced dancers be prepared to do shorter segments of the video the first few times in order to avoid frustration, or to "fudge it" a bit in order to keep pace and stay with the rhythm. Despite this problem, I found myself loving every segment of the DVD-- including the hip hop, which I have never been interested in before. The blend of hip hop, Latin, jazz and ballet means that you are never bored. I also think the ballet segment is a great addition at the end of the DVD because it allows you to elongate your muscles after tightening them up. If you love to dance and have plenty of experience following an instructor, you will find that your patience with this DVD pays off in the end. - posted by Thalia del Fuego, Belly dance teacher on 2/17/2008
Fun!
Hey. If you like dance workouts, this one is fun. I LOVE the jazz section. And, I love that all the sections are unique. I confess I'm slightly disappointed in the ballet section, but its a great way to cool down and get a little strength work after the cardio. I really like this instructor. She has become my favorite. She is pleasant and energetic but not overly perky. I also like that this workout has seperate warm-ups and cool-downs so that you use the full ten minutes of each section for cardio without needing a warm up and cool down. - posted by Laura, who is in a reviewing moood today on 10/21/2007
Dance Moves are fun
The dancing sections are fun but if you have a million videos and are used to working out to them the cueing for this one takes too much time. The buildup for me is not quick enough. The dancing is fun. Love the ballet section. - posted by Toni on 10/11/2007
Really Fun Video
I really enjoy the dance routines for this video. It's upbeat and fun to follow! - posted by Lynette on 9/18/2007
Makes me feel like a real dancer
This is my favorite dance fitness video. It is the most challenging one I have tried, but the effort is well worth it. I love this workout because while I'm doing it, I totally forget that I'm working out. That's because Jennifer Galardi teaches actual dance moves from the genres of hip-hop, Latin, jazz, and ballet. I like Jennifer's approach, which is to teach two strings of choreography per routine, then put them together and run them through two or three complete times. Jennifer has a more down-to-earth enthusiasm than some of the hyper-perky instructors in the fitness world. She also has a great sense of humor, grunting out an "Ugh! Ugh!" at the moments where we really need to get down, or an "Attitude, ladies!" when we need to show more style. I was doing some cha-cha steps from the Latin segment before ballet class, and one of my classmates said, "Wow! You have all kinds of rhythm!" That was a real compliment because I used to think I didn't have any rhythm. "Dance It Off!" helped me to turn it on. - posted by Elena on 9/16/2007
Fun dance video!!!
I enjoyed this video WAY more than Jennifer G's Crunch - Fat Burning Dance Party video! My favorite segment is the Latin Dance. I agree that the cueing is pretty fast paced, but Jennifer breaks it down move by move. I've been exercising to dance videos for many years, so I found these dance routines fairly easy to learn. If you are a beginner it might be a little frustrating to learn the moves. But the dance routines are interesting, fast-paced and fun - a good cardio workout. I agree it's a bit difficult on carpet, however - dance shoes with smooth soles would work better than aerobic shoes. All in all, this video is well worth the money spent! - posted by Kate on 9/7/2007
Love the Hip Hop
I have a lot of DVDs and this is one of my favorites. I love looking forward to the Hip Hop section especially. It takes a little practice to get it, but I feel like a dancer! Plus, the music is actually motivating, unlike a lot of exercise movies. - posted by April on 5/27/2007
Not great
Like another viewer said you need hardwood or no carpet flooring for this. The instructions were minimal. I felt clumsy and could not keep up. I exercise every day and am not a bad dancer, but this just didn't do it for me. The quick shift from one type of dance to another was a problem too though some might like the variety. I suspect that some body types just can't do some dances. If you are chested and have hips you are not going to look all that graceful with the ballet, and I also understand that hip hop is for the young. I wondered if it had something to do with the body type. Stronger bodies, different muscle shapes perhaps... and I think Jazz is favored because there usually isn't much of a hip factor...The DVD is pretty to look at, the girls do a great job, but not a workout for me and my body type I suppose. - posted by NF on 5/4/2007

What a disapointment!
The camera is all over the place making it difficult to mirror the instructor, especially toward the end of each routine. The instrucors queing is terrible. I feel like I'm spending so much time trying to figure out what I'm supposed to be doing that I don't get a workout. Two thumbs down! - posted by Patty on 4/13/2007

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
