Certified instructor description: Two separate Qi Gong (Chi Gung) workouts. “Fire” is slightly faster-paced; it’s designed to increase energy and expand your senses. “Water” is a little more contemplative and breath-focused; it’s designed to reduce stress and promote calmness. Both programs demonstrate 15 to 17 postures. They range from simple overhead arm motions like “moon circles,” to more detailed total-body movements like “taming the tiger” (where you squat down to “push on the tiger’s back" with your hands). Each workout starts with a “grounding” segment and ends with a gentle meditation. Precise, non-intimidating cuing. Quiet instrumental music. Filmed outdoors in the Arizona desert. ©2007. DVD has: Chapter menus, Music only option, Wide screen.

Qi Gong Fire & Water

Almost 5 stars
I really love this DVD! I like Matthew Cohen as an instructor. The only thing holding me back from rating this a 5 is that I find the "water" workout a bit dull, and I don't always have the time to commit to 40 min. - posted by Gina on 3/1/2011
I LOVE this video
I love these workouts, especially the "Fire" workout. It's really great for working with chi while gaining strength and balance. "Water" is great for winding down. It's all what you put in to it. I love working with the chi and the meditative poses, too, that Michael includes. I've studied (only a year) with a Chinese master, and so far, this is the next best thing. - posted by Diane on 11/9/2010
Not too bad
This isn't a bad DVD if you're looking for a new or different qi gong instructor and Matthew certainly has his own style. I don't mind having one of Matthew's DVD's but if he released more, I'd still stick to just one. It's worth trying different qi gong instructors to find the one you like most. - posted by Kathleen on 7/16/2010
The real deal!
I recently started practicing Wu Dao Gong, a Tai Chi-based martial art; Qi Gong is an important part of this discipline. I bought this DVD to help me practice Qi Gong at home. All the exercises we do in class are here, but with the addition of stunning scenery and evocative music - much more fun than working out in a dusty high school gymnasium! The DVD includes two distinct routines, "Fire" and "Water", each 40 minutes long. The "Fire" routine is the more energetic of the two; practiced regularly, it will improve your balance and leg strength. The more mellow "Water" routine would be good for de-stressing, or for a relaxing session before bed, particularly as it is filmed in the evening. Like some of the other reviewers, I would have preferred the inclusion of a shorter workout, say about 20 minutes, but each routine on "Fire & Water" is well-chaptered, so you can pick out a few exercises if you wish. The routines are presented as follow-along workouts, but Matthew suggests that you work up to practicing some of the poses for a longer period of time. Suitable for beginners, this DVD is also one you can grow with. If Matthew brings out a more advanced version, I would definitely buy it. - posted by RedPanda on 9/7/2009
this helps me with back problems
First of all, I am very much a beginner with Tai Chi, Ci Gong and other forms of meditative movement, so I do not have much else with which to compare this DVD (I have done 3 other DVDs: David Dorian Ross included, plus some all-level classes taught by advanced amateurs in retreat-workshop settings). HOWEVER, I am an experienced exerciser in general. This workout is perfect for me when I am having back problems or anxiety. I need the full 40 minutes to relax enough for the exercises to help me. The music, scenery and atmospheric lighting are incredible: so wonderful. The leader has a quiet soothing voice (voice-over style). Thank you Collage for making this material available to beginners like me. - posted by Bertha on 11/13/2008
GREAT QI GONG EXPERIENCE!!!
I totally loved both 40 minute workouts Fire and Water. I thought they were well paced with all movements flowing from one to the next. No choppy parts. The music was good also. And of course a workout done outdoors is always a plus. I felt very relaxed and rejuvenated in both mind and body. Fire was more intense and definately worked the lower body while Water was more relaxed and internally focused. I really liked the way Matthew explained every move that was done, the benefits and why we were doing it. It is in voice over but that didn't bother me. While I like Lee Holden's workouts and have a couple. There is a place for this Qi Gong workout with Matthew Cohen. I do hope Matthew puts out another Qi Gong workout with shorter lengths. Such as 20 minutes or 30 minutes. However I must say the 40 minute workouts went by fast with no dread factor for me. And of course its always nice to find a good Qi Gong workout priced low compared to Lee Holden's high prices. We need more Qi Gong workouts since there aren't that many. I thought this was a good purchase and a great addition to my little Qi Gong collection. - posted by NA/AWA on 8/7/2008
A little disappointing
My husband and I practise qigong together, mostly at home but we've also taken some classes. If you've never tried qigong before, it's really quite amazing. We prefer qigong's meditative effects to yoga. Matthew Cohen does an adequate job of demonstrating qigong movements on this dvd. It's nice that there are two programs on one dvd. But we don't like him as much as others on video, like David Dorian Ross's chi programs (not to be confused with his tai chi programs which are different) and Lee Holden who is our favorite. If I didn't have access to other qigong programs then I'd say this is better than nothing. It's too bad Matthew's two routines are both about the same length. If I were him I would have included a shorter routine. Not everyone has 40 minutes to spare everyday, and 20 minutes a day of qigong done consistently will do much more for you than 40 minutes now and then. - posted by Chris on 5/24/2008
Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.
sample time graph
Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
