Certified instructor description: A super-easy-to-follow step workout especially created for plus-size women. Lifting yourself up and down on the step boosts the intensity — and calorie burn — without complex movements (a step also lets you control your workout level by simply adjusting its height). The instructor, Debra Mazda, used to weigh 310 pounds. Now she’s a size 12, but hasn’t forgotten the importance of keeping the workout safe, simple and non-intimidating (“I was terrified the first time I did step”). Her moves are basic; her cues are clear and encouraging (“I know you can do this”). DVD includes a 15-minute step tutorial and a 9-minute bonus toning workout. All plus-size female class. ©2008.

ShapelyGirl: Let's Get Stepping!

You will get a great workout.
The workout is great but the quality of the DVD leaves a lot to be desired. The mouth does not sync up with the voice. - posted by Karen on 4/19/2012
GREAT WORKOUT
I love this step workout. It is easy to follow unlike some who do so many different steps I get confused. And her music is great too. Love it and hope she will come out with even more workouts. - posted by Becky on 3/15/2012
Great for us older girls!
I ordered this routine because I have one of Debra's other videos and like it very much. I've been away from stepping for over 15 years, so I was concerned about using a video that was too complicated or hard to follow. I was able to do this one right from the start. The steps and choreography were easy to follow and I was able to keep up through the entire video. It turned out to be a good choice for someone just returning to the activity. It will add variety to my workouts. - posted by Linda on 2/13/2012
love this
great workout and something different. have not done step in years due to my weight gain but this is so doable. I can really feel it in my legs and love the bonus sections on it - posted by Patricia on 2/6/2012
Shapely girl
I really like this workout. The footwork is easy to follow and I can keep up with it. I am 55 and not very coordinated or in very good shape. This is great for beginners to just get up and get moving. Debra is encouraging but not bossy or intimidating. - posted by Celeste on 2/3/2012

Great instructions - easy to follow. It feels good to workout with girls who look like me. - posted by Juliana on 1/3/2012
Not what I was looking for.
I viewed this video and ended up returning it. It wasn't the right fit for me. While I'm new to step, I danced for years and the cuing felt off at times. When encouraging the other steppers in the DVD, it sometimes sounded like chiding to me rather than encouragement. In general, it just didn't work for me - more a matter of personal style than anything. As other reviewers have noted, lots of folks love her. - posted by Erika on 12/11/2011
Great workout
Great workout, great video. Debra cue's you as to the next move and this makes it very easy to follow. This is a great video if you haven't done a step workout in sometime. I give this 5 stars - posted by Cynthia on 12/2/2011
Of a same age
I selected this CD because the Instructor and I are about the same age. I had tried step aerobics in the past, and results were great. I wanted to step up (no pun intended) my current level of fitness. This CD does the job. The choreography is basic and easy to follow. If you want a great workout without a lot of dancy hard to follow choreography, I highly recommend this CD. - posted by Donna on 11/25/2011

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Step aerobics
X
Definition: Stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. Requires a step bench platform.

Benefits: Burns calories. Strengthens your heart. Increases stamina. The step helps boost cardio intensity.
