Certified instructor description: Blends the intensity of step with the power of kickboxing. Kelly’s superb cuing makes this unique combination really work. By using consistent eight-count patterns, she effortlessly inserts punches, jabs and kicks into classic step combos (e.g. “three repeater knee” becomes “knee, kick, knee”). The first section features four well-structured cardio combos (they’re faster-paced than most step moves, with no slowing down; Kelly “cues as she goes”). Then it’s aero/tone intervals — dumbbell-based toning alternated with more step-kickbox cardio (all with an intensity and speed that will definitely keep your heart rate elevated). Requires two sets of dumbbells. ©2006. DVD has: Chapter menus.

Kelly Coffey's Step-Boxing

keeper!!!
after debating which kelly dvd to get, i settled on step boxing and am glad i did. it's a great workout, not a typical cookie cutter dvd. it's a unique addition to my collection. the pace is awesome with a great combo of step and kickboxing moves. additional weight/cardio section and abs are a huge plus. love kelley's style, though her cuing on this could be a bit better. - posted by jodi on 5/18/2012
Fast-Paced, Fun, Good Workout
You'll definitely want to watch this one before you attempt it (and maybe even try a few of the steps on your "preview"), because there are a few moves on the step that can be tricky, especially if you're not expecting them. Kelly's energy is amazing. The workout is fast so you don't get bored -- and you can definitely feel it working. The strength-training/toning section at the close has a lot of repetition of a few basic moves, which I don't "love", but it works. - posted by Trish on 3/22/2012
Solid Worktout
I'm a fitness teacher of 20 years. This workout is not super hard but not real easy either. It's great for my somewhat lighter workout days. Her cueing is generally good except for one or two spots. It's always easy to make things harder or easier if your familiar with the routine. Jump more or less, add extra weight, do some jacks or plyo stuff while she's slowing down to explain things. Or, if you want it lighter, do the opposite. I recommend this. - posted by Stacy on 10/18/2011
A Must Own For Steppers!
I get such a good workout from this DVD. Put this in your collection if you are intermed/adv and need a new fat burner. This was my first Kelly DVD I purchased back in 2008. Three months later I had to get two more of her videos because I was so impressed with this fun and sweaty workout. The cardio is intense and the kick boxing routines are easy to follow and nicely cued. Then she ends it with some dumbbell toning and abs. Sometimes I just use 5lbs. When I feel strong, then I use 7lbs (the movements are too fast to safely use a weight higher than 8lbs). Because I've owned it so long and am an advanced exerciser, I have to wait about 3 months to get the good workout this DVD can deliver. Kelly is one of my favorite instructors. She's great at what she does and you know she loves giving us a good workout. Highly recommended! - posted by Andrea405 on 5/18/2011
Great!
I really enjoy this workout! Its a nice combo of step and kickboxing moves. It took a few runs through it before I really felt like I knew the moves, but fairly easy to follow with decent cueing. I am not the most dancy-coordinated person, and this is more "athletically" choreographed, in my opinion. The abs section is also good. It is definitely for those who are on an intermediate/advanced level. - posted by Carolyn on 2/19/2011
Great Workout
This workout is great for the abs, all those twist punches are awesome toners for those obliques. The aerotone section is awesome too, I feel every muscle is getting a good workout and my heart rate stays up so I know I am getting a good aerobic workout as well. KEEPER! - posted by Brenna on 2/17/2011
Awesome Step DVD
This DVD was somewhat difficult and fast paced but now that I know the routine I love it. Give it time and don't give up because its lots of fun. As always she keeps you motivated and is a wonderful instructor. I have always been a big fan of The Firm but now that I found Kelly I find myself reaching for her DVD's instead. - posted by Yesi on 1/3/2011
Fun cardio!
I'm a new fan of Kelly Coffey-Meyer, and this workout DVD was a great purchase! The step section is really fun and fast-paced. After two times through, I got all the steps down. The cueing is not the best, but I think it's because the routine moves so quickly. All the moves are doable with time; you'll get the hang of it. Personally, I like a challenge, and I know I won't get bored with this routine! The weight section includes basic moves with light weights. This is an extension of cardio, and so far I've had to take a longer break after the step section to catch my breath! Do this workout on high-energy days. I will also pick sections of this workout to combine with other routines, which is fun to change things up. - posted by Laura on 12/6/2010
Very Fast-Paced
I own some other of Kelly's workout DVDs, and I enjoy her personality and technique. That being said, I completely agree with everyone that the choreography goes by SO quickly that it's hard to follow at times. I found myself jogging in place a lot, trying to figure out what they were doing onscreen. As for the intensity, I'm really surprised to hear people say it's good for light cardio days! I felt like I was going to die, and I was modifying many of the moves to off the step. All-in-all, I think it's a huge calorie-burner, but it's going to take many tries before I master the moves. That's nice, once you know what you're doing, but with so many workouts in my collection, I'm not sure I'll do this often enough to really "get it." - posted by Jamie on 6/18/2010
SO much fun!
I'm a huge Kelly fan, and this one got me hooked on step boxing. I hope she does more DVDs like is in the future. The pace is fast, but you will catch on quickly. The cardio step boxing is super fun. The weight segment is a little too easy for me and lacks diversity in the moves, but it's okay for a basic sculpting segment. You can always increase the weight for a little more difficulty. Kelly's routines will really work you if you give it your all. Definitely one of my favorites, and whenever I can't decide which of my many DVDs to do, I reach for this one or her cardio sculpting one for a fun, all-around good workout. - posted by Jody on 5/17/2010

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
