Certified instructor description: Aerobic-paced toning movements that use the rubber tubing resistance device included with the DVD. It’s a very time-efficient technique; you’ll burn calories as you sculpt your muscles. The Firm Resistance Cord is rubber tubing with two handles (similar to an X-ertube). You can grasp both handles in your hands for upper-body work or slip one handle over your foot to increase the intensity of lower-body moves. These non-stop, fast-paced exercises usually tone multiple muscle groups at once. They’re also smoothly linked together — without awkward transitions — so your heart rate never drops and you keep burning fat. Led by Tina Smalley. ©2006.

The Firm: Resistance Cord (with cord)

Great Travel workout
I love to take this dvd when I am on the road. The only equipment needed is a resistance band--super easy to pack. You get a full body work out in a short amount of time and it can easily be done in a hotel room. Just be sure to get a towel because there is some floor work! Tina cues very well. - posted by Paula on 12/4/2011
Love it!
Finally a workout that makes me feel as though I had a workout in a short period of time. - posted by cindy on 3/28/2011
Nice Cross-Training Workout
I do a lot of Firm workouts and other workouts that use dumbbells. This is nice to crosstrain with and work your muscles using the band. I also like Stephanie Huckabee's Powerfit workouts for the same reason. Tina cues well and once you get the moves down, the workout moves at a nice pace, hitting the muscles well in just 30 minutes. - posted by Elaine on 8/11/2010
Good when you're short on time
This is a fast, get you in and out kind of workout. No time is wasted explaining movements as you jump right in starting with the warm up (which I found boring and long). It's a pretty solid 25 min strength workout and the "cardio" comes from the pace of the movements as well as doing the 4 limb work. The only real cardio is the warm up. Bc of the pace I was not able to use a medium resistance strength tube which is the weight I would normally pick up for most exercises (heavy and light are used at times as well). I had to stick to the Light resistance and felt it for the most part if I really choked up on it. There isn't time to switch between a heavier and lighter band bc she has you hoppin' to keep the heart rate up. You may be able to after a few uses but I don't have the cords shown, I have to attach handles to mine which makes it impossible to switch at a faster pace. The lower body work was creative as it relates to the firm; I've seen it elsewhere but not with this brand. You have your lunges and squats but also various ab and adductions. I got a little sweaty and all the major muscle groups were covered. If you're looking for kick-butt strength this won't be for you unless you're able to use a heavy cord at an aerobic pace. It's good when you're short on time or motivation. - posted by Julia on 3/10/2010
Fun workout
This is a fun and unique workout. It was nice to use the band for a little variety in toning. Tina is adorable and nice and cues very well making it easy to follow along. There is not really any cardio to speak of, but it the moves were diverse and it was fun and effective. I think she did a great job! - posted by Shelley on 3/2/2009
Great Workout!
I thought that this was a great workout! I loved the music and I loved Tina but I especially loved all of the different ways that you can use sculpting cords. This was my first time using the cords. I was very impressed. And I just enjoyed doing the workout and that is what really matters. Plus I really felt it is my butt the next day, so I will definitely be using this DVD on a regular basis. I am glad I bought it! - posted by Emily on 2/24/2009
Not My Favorite
This is my first Firm workout (and the only one) I have tried. I really wanted to like it, but it just didn't do it for me. I wasn't too impressed with the workout itself and the instructor. I liked using the resistance cord, but some of the workout positions seemed weird to me. I found that I wasn't really motivated by the instructor. I've used the DVD a few times, but find that it is now gathering dust (I still use the resistance cord for other workouts, so I feel at least I got that for the money I spent). Hopefully, the other Firm DVD's are better than this one. I am now hesitant to try them after having the bad experience with this one. - posted by Victoria on 12/31/2008
GOOD "TIME CRUNCH" WORK-OUT!
I purchased this DVD though I was unsure of it's effectiveness after reading some of the reviews. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The design of the bands make them easy to grip, the calls are clear, and the background music is audible but not loud. I use the red bands and find that by the end of the work-out I'm sweating. I only wish that The Firm offered a longer version of this DVD because this one is only about 30 minutes; so I use this one when I'm on a time crunch. It's a great work-out! - posted by JoEve on 10/22/2008
Great Toning, But Forget the Cardio Title
I loved this video! I learned a lot of new ways to use the rubber tubing, and all her exercises are effective. I especially liked the spanish guitar music-very pleasant and soothing which was a nice contrast to the effort I was putting into the workout. I wish more workout videos used music like that. I also wish there were more videos devoted to rubber tubing because it's a great way to tone muscles without using weights and creating larger muscles. I used the light resistance and still got a great workout. However, it would be nice if the video came with all three resistances so you could pick and choose. Some exercises I needed more resistance and on others I needed less. Some people complained that the tubing was complicated to use, but after doing the video once, I had the hang of it. I gave it only 4 stars because the title is misleading in that there really is no cardio benefit from it-five minutes of warmup and that's it. The only complaint I have about the video is that there are a lot of squats in the warmup, and then immediantly afterwards, Tina goes into a bunch of squat exercises. It's way too many! Hard on the knees, so I tone down that move or alleviate it all together. But I've got to recommend this video to anyone who wants to tone up or anyone who wants to add a new piece of equipment to her workout. - posted by Stacey on 9/4/2008
Did not like
I do not like this workout, the positions are really strange, however, it is good if you are just starting to work out. - posted by Sarah on 7/30/2008

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
sample time graph
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
