Time graph for The Firm: The 500 Calorie Workout
This aero/tone interval workout alternates intense cardio with fast-paced, multi-muscle body-sculpting (compound exercises). It’s a smooth-flowing format that keeps your body blasting calories for the entire 64 minutes. All the toning segments feature functional, progressively intensifying exercises. Kelsie Daniels makes them doable by carefully layering in the add-on sequences (so you already have a feel for the timing before you do the movement). The aerobic sections include straight-forward calorie burners like jacks, step touches and grapevines. Kelsie’s instruction is friendly, but no-nonsense (“we’re here to get results!”). Requires two sets of dumbbells (e.g. 3 and 5 lb.). ©2008.

The Firm: The 500 Calorie Workout

Take The Challenge!
I loved this workout as well, and, YES, it is fast-paced and challenging, but I was up for the challenge. While it was not easy to follow the first time I did the workout, I was much more comfortable the second time around. I can "feel" why you work off 500 calories, as it is a full-body workout. I loved all the steps and the routine changes and modifications. I highly recommend it. - posted by Y Mayfield on 10/28/2009
Great workout!
I Love, love, love this workout! Kelsie's form is always perfect and she motivates throughout the workout. This workout is not for beginners or those unwilling to put in the work to burn 500 calories in 63 minutes. She works the ENTIRE body. It is just what I needed to spark-up my workout, after having worked out consistently for more than 19 years. I look forward to more videos from the Firm and Kelsie. - posted by Francis on 10/25/2009
Good workout
I think this DVD is an overall good workout. The moves are good and challenging. The queing is good BUT the cardio segments are not on the beat whatsoever. This makes it hard for me to follow along. I find myself learning the move and then not looking at the screen so I can be on the beat. It's like DVD was filmed and music added over the top. - posted by Sarah on 10/6/2009
Excellent!
I love this workout and I love Kelsie! Her cuing is phenomenal, in fact, she cues better than almost any other instructor (and I have about 200 exercise DVDs!) I don't understand the negative reviews. The routines are fun, creative, and get your heart rate up. The toning is tough, esp the straight leg push-up sequence. Anybody that thinks this workout is too easy, isn't doing it with any intention. I was surprised its not rated Int/Adv for some sections, but overall it provides a nice push and a full-out workout. And Kelsie is awesome, as usual. She is definitely one of the best there is! - posted by Sheila on 10/4/2009
I loved this work out!
I thought the moves were new and interesting. It gave me a good workout without having to learn a bunch of complicated moves. Kelsie did an excellent job leading this workout. - posted by Cheryl on 10/4/2009
Worst FIRM EVER!
I was so looking forward to being able to burn 500 cals on this one! Unfortunately, the cueing is so bad that I had a hard time getting a workout because the instructor would change moves so quickly that I could not keep up. I love the older firm videos (especially Allie Delrio), the instructors would always give you plenty of warning and I could concentrate on getting a great workout. Kelsie does not cue correctly or timely! This lead to a very frustrating 60 minutes for me-I wish I could get my money back on this one. The Firm needs to concentrate on what they used to do great, not change things for the worse! Kelsie needs major lessons on how to help her audience follow her. Don't waste your $$ on this one, unless you enjoy utter frustration! - posted by Sierra on 9/28/2009
Not worth spending your money on.....
I am a HUGE fan of the old Firm workout videos/DVDs so when I purchased these new videos I was NOT IMPRESSED. If you are going to purchase a Firm Workout I recommend trying one of the older videos. This is just my preference. I have been working out for 13 years now and personally I think the new Firm videos and instructors are very boring and slow. - posted by Julie on 9/16/2009
Off on Rhythm
I found this DVD very hard to follow as the instructor does not begin the routines on the downbeat. Everything feels off after that. As a former group exercise instructor getting the exercises to match the music and rhythm are key to having your participants enjoy the workout. I had no problem with the fast pace or inventive moves but often found myself not looking at the screen and doing the exercises to the "correct" beats of the music. This one bothers me. - posted by Ava Jenkins on 9/14/2009
500 Calorie Workout or Bust!
I've really enjoyed this workout. I purchased about five months ago and used three to four times a week since then. I've lost 35 pounds and have an awesome core. My personal goals were total body fitness, stable core, support for my spine, and strengthen my upper legs. Kelsie really delivers a great mixed exercise that combines five minute cardio with five minute aero-toning. After a few months, I paused the dvd and inserted my own additional cardio options (jumprope or another dvd) then went back to the last 10 minutes (standing abs and cooldown). I took this one with me on my vacation to keep up my routine. This dvd will always be in my regular use routine. I'm looking today for more Kelsie-dvds because she is a very solid instructor. I hope Kelsie (or the Firm) will continue with interval workouts. It's a great format. - posted by Iarad on 9/7/2009
Not Much of a Challenge
I didn't have a problem with Kelsie's cueing, the routine is pretty easy to learn and I liked Kelsie's personality. My problem with this DVD is that it isn't challenging at all. I am an advanced exerciser and even though I never expected to burn 500 calories, as the title implies, I did expect to feel like I got a good workout. Personally, I do not think any of these newer Firm videos are challenging. Nothing like the original ones from years ago. Oh, and at the end of this workout, my heart rate monitor showed I had burned only a little over 200 calories. Not worth my time. - posted by Laurel on 8/26/2009

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
sample time graph
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
