Certified instructor description: A short-but-intense workout that blends aerobics and dumbbell-toning into a non-stop fat-burner. It combines the intensity — and the results — of the legendary 1990’s Firm videos with an updated, fresher feel (e.g. an uncluttered set, some kickboxing moves). It features lots of The Firm’s “four limb movements” that burn fat as they simultaneously tone your upper and lower body (e.g. aerobic-paced lunges with alternating bicep curls). Alison Davis maintains the classic “Firm” experience with a confident attitude and direct, clear cuing (so even her fast-moving transitions are easy to follow because you always know what’s coming). Requires 3 to 5 lb. dumbbells. ©2006. DVD has: Region 1.

The Firm: Ultimate Fat Burning Workout

Not so much...
I'm a Cathe-nut and thought I'd give this one a try as the price was right. Definitely not an Advanced level as it states. The music is boring and has an overall low-budget feel. The workout didn't keep me engaged and I didn't feel I got much of a cardiovascular workout. I will be returning this DVD. - posted by Carie on 2/16/2012
This is one of my faves
Good workout. Completely works your body!! I really enjoyed the full array of workout moves. Love the cueing of Allison, she is very likeable..and is definitely clear on the moves that you will need to make. I thought the transition time between the moves were great. Overall 4 stars!! - posted by MsMediator on 12/18/2011
Smooth and flowing
I really liked this workout very much. True, it is definitely not advanced and it's not intense, I classify it as beginner/intermediate and it is more cardio than toning. I used 5 lbs dumbbells and thought it was rather light. I guess I could increase the weights but then again since it moves fairly quickly I don't think I could use anything heavier than this. Since I've been doing FIRM tapes for more than 2 years (mostly old ones) I didn't have any trouble at all with the choreography. In fact, I thought it was so easy to follow. Usually with cardio tapes, it takes me 2 to 3 times to get it, not with this one. It was very smooth and flowing. I did break up a nice sweat. Alison's cueing is very good. Overall, I would recommend it if you are looking for a light workout, or if you're starting out. I'll be definitely looking forward to doing it again on those days when I don't have the stamina for an intense, long workout. - posted by Patricia on 4/15/2011
Fun Workwout
This workout was fun to do. I really like Allison. Her cueing is excellent and she's so likeable and relaxed. She really loves what she's doing and her attitude is contagious. Depending on how much you exert yourself, this workout can be made higher or lower impact, depending on your energy level on any particular day. It always takes me two to three attempts at a workout before I learn the moves well enough to really work up a sweat, so don't give up after the first attempt! - posted by Patty on 3/26/2011
Not Intermediate Level
I did this workout for the second time this morning. It's a workout for a lighter day. I would NOT call it Intermediate, and definitely not Advanced. I'd say it's good for a beginner or a pregnant woman because it's very low impact and low intensity. I didn't care for the first cardio segment, the second was more fun with some mambos and sashe moves, and the kickboxing segment was pretty fun. There is some core work at the end that is new and different, and I always enjoy new and different standing core work. The toning segments are still cardio-focused. But, overall, I really disagree with the targeted level of this workout, and I think you would be disappointed if you bought it expecting an Intermediate/Advanced workout. - posted by Mindy on 3/11/2011
Not a keeper...
Of all The Firm workouts, this is by FAR my least favorite. I think my reaction, right after I was done, was an exasperated "I hate it." It was the nightmare of those who hate dance type exercise...this is NOT basic choreography as shown on the page. Although I would call it a lower intermediate workout, the dance moves dominate and are so "all over the place" that (not a joke) I actually tripped over myself and went tumbling down. Not good. I found myself thinking "when will this be over" throughout the workout. Very little time is dedicated to the weights - although it's in there, the aerobics dominate. I much rather prefer some of the other Firm workouts such as Get Chisel'd and Total Body Time Crunch. I won't even bother trying it again. Back it goes. - posted by Julian on 3/9/2011
Good workout... but NOT advanced
Not sure where Collage got the Intermediate/Advanced rating for this one. I would consider it lower (VERY lower) intermediate. I have had this in my rotation for several years, and enjoy the workout on days that I just can't bring myself to exert myself to my fullest (like this morning ;))... I still get a good workout from it.... the weight sections keep my heartrate up and I enjoy the cardio. - posted by April on 10/26/2010
Not for the intermediate to advanced
This video was boring and a disappointment. The transitions were very quick and Allison's cuing during the kickboxing was off. I would not recommend this video for the intermediate to advanced. - posted by Joanne on 7/21/2010
One of my favorites!
This has become one of my favorite workout videos to go to because the time flies when you are having fun. Allison is an excellent instructor and the moves are interesting and challenging. I don't get that bored or can't wait till this workout is over feeling when I use this dvd. I like that I get my cardio and toning done together. I am grateful for this low impact dvd on days when my knees are giving me problems but I still want to work out. This workout also incorporates all of the Firm's signature moves! - posted by Rebecca on 7/10/2010
Great workout!
I love all...well most Firm workouts. ALLISON is awesome and you will break a sweat. This is def one of my favorites. - posted by Jacqui on 4/22/2010

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Region 1
X
This DVD is designed for US and Canadian DVD players. It will NOT play in most foreign country players.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
