Certified instructor description: This “basic” kit includes four workouts plus The Firm’s “Wave” platform. The Wave is super-versatile: Rounded side up: it boosts aerobic intensity and increases range of motion (as a step and a weight-lifting bench). Rounded side down: it adds a playful balance and core focus to every exercise (e.g. rocking back and forth while you’re doing squats is a true ab challenge). Each of the four workouts is different: “Ride the Wave” is a compact muscle toner that also teaches you the moves. “Speed Slimming Sculpt” includes multi-muscle exercises to efficiently reshape your entire body (while also improving balance). “Rock It Off” alternates intervals of fat-burning cardio with innovative body-sculpting motions. “Express Abs” is a non-stop set of ultra-varied floor and standing abwork. The Wave is solid and well-constructed; it measures 28” x by 14". Workouts are led by Emily Welsh, Allie DelRio and Alison Davis-McLain. This set also includes a padded mat and weight loss booklet plus a wall chart showing the moves. Requires 3 to 8 lb. dumbbells. ©2008. DVD has: 2 premixes (21 & 23 min. alternate workouts), Region 1.

The Firm: Wave Basic

I Like It
I just tried this today and I liked it. My heart rate got much higher than I expected. I appreciated the 10-minute tutorial to get acclimated to the Wave. It definitely got me ready for Speed Slimming Sculpt, which I really liked. Allie put together a great workout for the Wave. I burned some good calories in 30 minutes. Better than I expected after reading the previous reviews. There definitely is a difference between using the Wave and a regular step for these workouts. I like the variety. I had no issues at all with the Wave slipping. The set inlcludes a mat to be placed underneath the Wave and it never slipped once. - posted by Marla on 1/28/2012
Just OK
I am a long time Firm user and prefer the older workouts better than the newer ones they've come up with lately. My sister bought the Wave and I borrowed it in eager anticipation of doing a new Firm workout but, like other comments people have made, I found it to be difficult to use, it slides all over the place, feels a bit unsafe and I can do the majority of the content in these workouts on the Firm step I already have. I will have no problem buying the videos separately and using my Firm step but I will not be using the wave again. Very disappointed. - posted by Melissa on 7/15/2011
Last Firm for Me
I purchased the Wave set, when it first came out, very excited by the hype. I had been disappointed by my last few Firm purchases, and thought they had turned their act around and had come up with something great...one of the 3 videos is just a 10min intro. Speed Slimming Sculpt uses the wave, primarily in the humped position, as a step (I have enough step videos), which is very boring to me. I liked Rock it Off better, which rocked the wave a bit (made me feel like I was playing with my new toy!), but wasn't used in that position for long, and it just seemed a stretch for them to try to figure out how to incorporate it because it just wasn't creative or effective. This set is basically another step video. I am a fan of the original 3 Firm videos. They were voted by leading fitness magazines as most effective on the market, and when I go back to the only one I still have, I can see results literally overnight! No other workout has ever come close to being so effective (including many, many newer Firms, which I sold for $1 each), and they really know what they are doing- a combination of interval training, yoga, ballet, dance, body sculpting, so scientifically and artistically choreographed! I would love to see Collage Video able to offer them, once again!! I still have Janet Gretsky's Firm 2, and treat it like a family heirloom, because it's on VHS, and so worn out, each time I play it, I wonder if it will make it through the workout! - posted by Linda on 7/1/2011
Only wish they made some more vids...
I own almost every pink firm DVD out there and I really do like the wave. When I was at my goal weight, I was jogging and doing the wave on alternate days. I always broke a drenching sweat with Allie's workout in 30 mins. I understand some firmers are disappointed that the workouts aren't longer but intervals make them more intense. Besides, if 30 minutes isn't long enough for you, do one 30 min workout and a 20 minute....or a 30 and then the 10 minute abs. It doesn't take long to reach that 45 you are looking for and changing things up is good for your metabolism to keep firing. - posted by Laura on 11/7/2010
Great piece of equipment
I had GBS in 2004 and had 3 children in 3 years following that. After having the children, I found myself having gained about 50 pounds and was back up to 292. Out of frustration, I purchased the Wave and was QUITE pleased. I had done step aerobics after having GBS so I was not new to some of the lingo. The instructors do a fine job of giving you a heads up to changes in movement IF YOU PAY ATTENTION. They always have someone to do more basic moves as they do the more complex ones. The time goes by quickly and is challenging. I would say a couple of things about this set, though. (1) When purchasing the Wave, it only comes with the basic 3 DVD set, which is fine to start and will give you an excellent workout. I exceeded the 275 lb. weight limit and still found it to be a sturdy piece of equipment. (2) There should be an option to purchase either the remaining 2 DVD's or to purchase the Deluxe kit. (3) I would wonder how someone would continue to stay challenged at the The Wave once they reach an advanced level of fitness. (4) The Wave is NOT for someone who is not up for a challenge and has trouble quickly adapting. If you give up on new experiences quickly, the Wave may not be for you because it IS a little different than the normal step. It DOES provide a good workout. An inspiration for me is watching the ladies' great bodies and giving myself something to shoot for. They are very positive and encouraging women and make even beginners feel like they are working hard. A great investment!!! - posted by VAMommyof4 on 10/18/2010
Lots of frustration!
I am a 15 year walker with Leslie Sansone and I wanted to really bump up my workout so I made the plunge and tried the The Firm's Wave. I could not have been more disappointed. I dont understand any of the reviews that say this is so great and works so fast. I am glad it works for some people. I took it out of the box and started the DVD and it never once made sense. The instructions are not instructing anyone - no prep or anything. I guess I am spoiled by my long years of success with a teacher like Leslie Sansone because none of this made any sense. If you want to watch someone workout this is great but I dont see how anyone can learn anything from these videos - I just kept tripping on the wave - my heart rate went but out of frustration not cardio. - posted by Jonna on 9/27/2010
It can make you breathless!
I've had this set for some time now and tried it out when I first bought it. It was fun for the first 4 to 5 workouts, but it quickly got boring. I decided to give this system another try because it's one of the few DVD systems on the market that offers complete workouts in 40 minutes or less plus 20-25 minute express options. I need cardio to improve my aerobic conditioning during the winter but I don't want to spend 60 minutes daily on it. This did the trick. I think that Speed Slimming Sculpt is the best of the 2 main workouts, but both are decent. I feel this in the "fanny lifter" targeted section just between your butt and thighs. My inner thighs are also sore. I used light weights on this DVD and it left me gasping for air at times, but didn't do much for upper body. Since I'm just starting out with this, I am unable to go much heavier because of the lack of balance. I'm an intermediate and think this is rated properly. I do wish there was more rocking or carving the Wave, but I can add it on throughout the day if I'm bored. It's not a favorite, but it's also not as bad as I had once thought. I would purchase the extra DVDs because I enjoyed it that much. It though doesn't seem like a system that will provide outstanding results if you are like me and do other workouts on a regular basis. If you're new to fitness, then it probably would. - posted by Venus on 2/5/2010
Enjoy the Wave!
I'm a 24 year old in good shape, but I have a pain from an old stress fracture in my foot limiting my ability to do walk/run everyday. The Wave solved my problem! My feet don't hurt the next day because it is lower impact. I love to the do the workouts and it keeps me working out on a regular schedule. There are two cons: the work-outs do take some time to see results. I've been doing it for 2-3 weeks and haven't seen amazing results (lost about 2 lbs). Also, I wish the workouts incorporated more rocking on the wave. That being said I love the Wave and think sticking with it will peel away my extra lbs. While the workouts are short, you can always put two of them together to get a longer workout in. I hope in the future they release longer workouts and more rocking sets. Overall, a great system. - posted by Teresa on 1/12/2010
Not a gimmick!
I finally broke down and bought the Wave and am not disappointed! I was skeptical, thinking it was just another way to sell a gimmick, and didn't like the short workouts. The short workouts are short for a reason - they work every part of your body every minute. When you are working your upper body, your lower body is still engaged, either just balancing on the Wave, or rocking. It takes more than a couple times to get used to it, but I am seeing definition in my abs that I've never seen after years of workout out with many different exercises. I like that the Wave uses my core muscles, as well as muscles not usually used ever. I feel more balanced and strong since adding these videos to my routine. It seems to work those underlying supporting muscles that seem to get the short end of the stick with traditional workouts. - posted by Kristin on 11/15/2009
Sore in new places!
I finally got The Wave, even after reading all the negative comments - it looked fun and low impact. One thing I did note in several reviews and the instructions was FORM, FORM, FORM. I still have to work on my FORM when riding the Wave - I usually start with Riding the Wave to review. I am a 50 yr old advanced beginner who works out about 30 minutes a day 5-6 times a week. The first time I used the Wave, I followed the beginner routine on the chart - Ride the Wave and Speed Slimming Sculpt (SSS) Express. Ride the Wave is just a How-to video and SSS is only 30min, so the Express must only be about 15 minutes. I figured this would just be a learning session, but I was wrong! I had a good sweat going half-way thru SSS Express. About 1 hr afterward, I noticed my legs felt a little rubbery. The next morning I was sore, but it was hard to pinpoint the exact muscles. It wasn't the ones used to step with (these muscles were exercised in other workouts), but higher on the outside of my glutes and my outer thighs (YEAH). Later in the day I felt soreness in my quads. I have no problem with the length of the workouts - I usually only have time for about 30 minutes a day. I wish they would "Ride the Wave" more instead of mostly step work. I am used to step work (and the wave is smaller than the Transfirmer), but I really feel it more when I "Ride the Wave". I hope to pick up the Rock off Abs and Rock Off Buns workouts eventually. I am hopeful this will really work off my thighs! (and buns, belly, etc.) - posted by Teresa on 10/15/2009

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes
X
These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Region 1
X
This DVD is designed for US and Canadian DVD players. It will NOT play in most foreign country players.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
