Certified instructor description: A straight-forward step workout with short, easy-to-learn combos. Each section is completely different and never repeats (e.g. all lateral foot moves, step turned toward the TV, a squat-only series). Besides being mentally interesting, this diversity lets Tracie vary the intensity level and movement complexity. The patterns are taught add-on-style. You’ll learn a base move and then add on the variations like mambos, triple steps or jumping jacks (but, don’t worry, you can always go back to the base move). It’s not complicated, but the movements are challenging — your legs are sure to feel this workout. Ends with a short floorwork segment. “Firm-style” cuing (Tracie was an original Firm master instructor). ©2009. DVD has: 2 premixes (15 & 20 min. alternate workouts), Chapter menus.

Tracie Long's Longevity: Step Forward

Great tape, but not for me
I am a Tracie fan from her FIRM days, and this tape is a great length with good choreography. However, if you have bad knees or work out on carpet, it may not be for you. - posted by Ruth on 3/9/2012
Great Change Up
I am an advanced stepper and I have never done Tracie or the firm - my go to's include Cathe F, Kari A, Kathy Smith, Gin Miller and I found this to be very different and was pleasantly surprised. First off I sweat my butt off, and I really liked how there were a lot of different combos that were short and to the point, never repeating - there is no dread or boredom factor with this one. People should be aware though that this is very different from your usual run of the mill stepping - all focused on legs; arms are sort of a by-product. It says basic choreography but the moves are quite different then I have seen anywhere else and they move fast; on several combos I had to play the move over and over again and slow it down with my remote to catch on - so I would not recommend it for people who do not have the tolerance to catch on and work through it. My husband gave up, but I am keeping it for me and love it. Also important to note that this workout feels more like a leg workout using a step bench than your traditional choreographed stepping workout. - posted by Michelle on 2/11/2012
great wworkout!!
I have been working out at home for over 23 years with Collage Videos and this is one of my favorites. The length of the workout and fat burning routine is perfect for my exercise routine. Choreography is not super challenging but interesting and effective. I have been a long time Firm follower and seeing Tracie Long in an all step routine is refreshing. A no nonsense dvd!!! - posted by gwen marie on 12/10/2011
Great step workout
If you love step, you will love this workout. Tracy Long makes this step workout fun and challenging. Some step dvd's are too easy and get boring after the first time or two that you do them. Tracy adds some innovative moves to keep your interest over time. If you are new to step, take it slow. It also helps that the music is so much better than most videos. Much better production values than on some of her previous videos. I've admired Tracy for years, and she still motivates me to work harder. - posted by Leslie on 9/20/2011
Not my favorite
I was bored with this tape. Its just a step tape. I did not find it motivating and Tracy Long was blah. It is a good tape and the moves were safe. Perhaps I should wait and let it grow on me!! - posted by Lina on 9/17/2011
Good Workout
I did this dvd for the first time this morning. I have to say that I really liked it. I used to do a lot of step but the past few years have gotten away from it and moved towards other forms of cardio. This step dvd is a good workout, I was definitely sweating at the end. It was very easy to follow with lots of variations. I would recommend this workout. - posted by Laura on 4/21/2011
Disappointing
Tracie is usually better at giving direction. I didn't feel she delivered in this one. The combos were too short, and she rarely gave prior notice to a change of steps before she was into it, and then quickly moved on to another. Makes me hesitant to try any of her other new ones. - posted by Vickie on 4/17/2011
Good Workout
I have two left feet and struggle with complicated choreography which is why I chose this video. I appreciate Tracie's straight forward approach to step. I could actually do this and the routine definitely got my heart rate up. - posted by Stephanie on 4/14/2011
Good workout but cuing could be better on this one
I've been working out with Tracie since her Firm days and I've always loved her instruction and style. I recently purchased all of her Longevity and Focus workouts and so far have tried Staying Power, Back Up, Kick Back and today I did Step Forward. Although I think this one will grow on me and I'll get more out of it when I learn the steps (I had to stop it several times to rewind to get the steps so my heartrate didn't stay up the whole time). I finally got through the workout but was very frustrated about the cuing on this one. Compared to Tracie's usual instruction, I felt the cuing in this workout seemed late and lacking in some parts. I'm sure once I get the steps down I'll enjoy it more, because after all, it IS Tracie and I can always count on her for a great, fun workout with lots of variety to keep it interesting! - posted by Christine on 3/27/2011
This workout grew on me!
At first I didn't think this workout was basic or easy to follow, as Tracie's cuing could use improvement. However, after a couple more times of trying (because I love Tracie and wanted to like this!), I now really enjoy this great workout! To correct the Collage time graph, however: it's a 5 warm-up, 32 min cardio (not 36), 12 min toning (not 8) and 4 min stretch = 53 min. I love doing just the cardio for a great 41 minute workout. You have to work hard at following along to get the moves, because she changes it up and does not always let you know, but once you do, it's really fun. I had a blast and can't wait to do this workout again! Tracie, more step/cardio workouts please! - posted by Cheryl on 3/18/2011

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes
X
These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
