Certified instructor description:
From his nationally-acclaimed New York studios, Alan Finger clearly displays his 30 years of yoga teaching experience in this very “approachable” video. Alan always just seems to know what you’re feeling and doing during each pose (so his soft voice can gently guide you from there to the proper form). Alan starts with breathing — deep and contemplative. Then, one move at a time, you’ll learn and do all the yoga basics — cat, cobra, downward dog, mountain, etc. You get the mind/body connection in a straight-forward manner (e.g. “now make an echo-y sound in your mouth”). Includes modifications including “more flexible” and “less flexible” alternatives. Quiet music. ©1998. DVD has: Chapter menus.

Yoga Zone: Introduction to Yoga

Good Workout for Beginners
I've tried Rodney Yee For Back Care and thought I'd switch up to something new. I found Yoga for Beginners to be very good, however, my main complaint is that I found it to be too slow the first few times that I tried it. The good thing is, it has helped me to slow down and really relax. Now, I actually look forward to it in the evenings. - posted by Susan on 5/10/2011
Great introduction to yoga
I used this video for several years and enjoyed it immensely. Finger's instruction is easy to understand and you feel great after the hour. The only downside is that it is almost an hour, and it is sometimes difficult to find the time. - posted by Carrie on 12/27/2008
JUST like my college intro class
I had to take a basic yoga class in college for my theatre degree, and this DVD has the *exact* same exercises that we worked on in class. It is evenly paced with good direction to help you stretch and strengthen. I had to go back to square one, as I have lost most of my strength and flexibility in the last couple of years. I tried a Shiva Rea DVD the other day and was immediately humbled, so I had to search for a beginning yoga DVD. This is PERFECT as it is both challenging and relaxing without being at all intimidating. Remember that it is important to figure out the basic moves and do them well before moving on to hardcore sun salutations! This DVD helps you do that. I am looking forward to trying more in the series as I get stronger and more limber. Alan's voice is soothing and the workout is refreshing and slow. I am already standing taller. - posted by Amy on 2/25/2008
Yoga, but not for beginners
If you already have good flexibility, this is OK - the instructor is very pleasant. But there are few substitution poses for people who are not yet flexible or fit. A great video for fit people looking for an intro to yoga, but a waste of money for beginning exercisers. - posted by Carla on 8/3/2007

THE BEST YOGA VIDEO EVER
This is by far the best cued yoga video out there. Whether you are new to yoga or not this video is for you. Newbies will find it very informative while instilling a love of the practice and more advanced students can use this for days when they feel like taking it a bit easier. I started doing yoga with this video two years ago and I can't say enough about Yoga Zone and Alan Finger. He is simply THE BEST! - posted by Meg on 4/9/2007
10 out of 10
I am 42 years old and new to yoga. I chose this one for my first because of reviews from here and magazines. I love this DVD more each time I use it. I feel just a little more flexible every time. Very easy on my joints. I had pretty much given up on exercise except for walking due to joint issues. I really feel I can only improve and feel better. Will definitely order more of Yoga Zone. - posted by Kay on 1/7/2006
One of My Favorites
This is the video that got me into yoga. The cuing is excellent and the poses flow together beautifully. It is definitely beginner level, but it is also adaptable so you can use it for months and still find ways to challenge yourself. I also really liked the emphasis on breathing - one of the most important elements in yoga. - posted by Jenny on 10/1/2003
Get Hooked
After using this yoga video, I'm sure you will get hooked on the other Yoga Zone videos. Alan Fingers' buttery voice leads you through the best yoga postures for beginners. - posted by Lori K on 10/2/2002
Best beginners tape for I've found
I'm so glad I found this tape. My mom is a yoga teacher so I've enjoyed yoga a long time, but am overweight and not so flexible. I'm intimidated by live classes with all the "pretzel people." This tape is a god send for people like me, who want the benefits of yoga in their routine while they lose weight. The instructions are wonderful. You don't have to strain to look at the TV because Alan Finger tells you verbally every little nuance of what to do and where you'll feel it in your body. Nice relaxing music, good set, two levels of flexibility demonstrated. Not too new-agey, but still yogic and spiritual. This tape is soothing, relaxing, and gets out all the kinks and knots. I highly recommend it! One thing: splurge and buy a "sticky" mat. Very worthwhile investment... - posted by Amy on 1/26/2002

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
