Personal History: I’ve suffered from back pain and weight gain my entire life. At age 19, I was diagnosed with two degenerative discs in my upper back, and later at age 20 was diagnosed with mild scoliosis in my lower back, and a bulging disc in my lower back. Doctors told me never to workout again. I quit the dance team in college, and just accepted the fact that I couldn’t work out and was overweight. At age 23 I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I was really sick, and had gained a lot of weight. I had a desk job, and had to take 1-2 naps a day while at work because I was so tired. I was determined to turn my life around. I saw a Naturopath who helped me with my thyroid, and also nutrition. I started eating non-processed foods and more protein. I hired a personal trainer and learned how to lift weights and exercise with the proper technique. I realized I could exercise; I just had to do it properly. I was so happy with the transformation that I trained to become certified as a group fitness instructor. I fell in love with teaching. I was able to pass on the knowledge I’ve learned to my students. Every spare second I had, I found myself reading any exercise/nutrition related articles or books I could get my hands on. I finally lost the weight, no longer had to take naps at work, and had so much energy!
Workout Philosophy: My advice to all my students is to not try, just do! It is amazing what someone can do when they put their mind to it.
Sucess Story: This is a story about my parents. They live out of state, and while visiting them I noticed how badly they were eating. They looked awful. My mom could barely walk up the stairs without being out of breath. My mom had been diagnosed with the onset of diabetes and osteoporosis, and my dad had really high blood pressure and virtually no energy. I was determined to help them change their life around. It wasn’t easy. I called them two times per week and educated them on the basics of nutrition. They signed up for a personal trainer at the gym, and I sent them my DVDs to workout to on days they weren’t at the gym. I developed a nutrition program for them to follow, and they started to lose weight, but it was slow. They were avoiding exercise like the plague! What better motivation to do a workout DVD when your own daughter is the star of the video? I realized how much our society avoids exercise in general. If you ask most people, they will try any pill and gadget imaginable before they will actually get up and exercise! I realized that they were overwhelmed. I decided to try a different approach. My DVDs are segmented so that you can do 5-6 min sections at a time. I gave them a ‘rule’ that they MUST complete at least 10 min of my DVD before they eat dinner, and at least 10 min of cardio when they get up in the morning. They felt they could do anything for 10 min! Before you know it, they were both working out to my DVDS religiously 3-4 days per week. My dad’s blood pressure is lower than it has ever been, and my moms blood sugar and cholesterol are completely under control. Both of my parents are now working out 5-6 days a week. They have both lost 25 lbs and have way more energy. My dad said my mom has not been able to genuflect at church for almost 10 years, and now she is doing it without any issues. To see the transformation in the two people who gave me life, was amazing. Knowing they are headed into retirement healthier than they were 20 years ago, is a really, really great feeling!
