Personal History: I am an avid cyclist and runner. I know the importance of keeping muscles limber for peak performance, as well as comfort and safety in daily activities. In 1968, at the age of 23, I began a personal physical fitness program, because I felt I was overweight and out of shape. I changed my diet, started eating less, and began running and cycling. My weight went from 190 to 135 pounds over a period of time and I was soon in much better physical condition. In a conditioning class in college, I discovered I could not reach much past my knees in a straight-legged sitting position. After discovering how tight I was, I started stretching. In several months, I became much more limber; I found that stretching made running, cycling, and other activities easier and more enjoyable. I also found that it eliminated most of the muscular soreness that usually accompanies strenuous physical exertion.
